The Republic of Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, standing at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and Asia. While the oldest known settlements in Cyprus date from the Neolithic Age, the ancient Mycenaeans established the first Greek roots more than 3, years ago. The Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans, and British also left their footprints, thus the story of Cyprus is told through its historic sites: ancient Greek temples, Roman ruins, early Christian churches, Byzantine monasteries, Crusader castles, Gothic churches, and Venetian fortifications. Many fine examples of Byzantine art have survived on the island, which you can see in the painted churches of Cyprus with their colorful frescoes, and many of the old customs and traditions are still practiced: the art of lace-making, pottery, and hand-woven goods. Through the medium of recorded interviews the Greek-American Oral History Project seeks to create an extensive repository of firsthand testimonials documenting the lives and experiences of Greek Americans in the Sacramento region and beyond for posterity. The Project began in early when the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Foundation provided a gift to the Capital Campus Oral History Program to purchase oral history recording and transcription equipment for the program’s ongoing use and to conduct and professionally transcribe oral history interviews with members of Sacramento’s Greek-American community.
Working closely with community members Penny and Terry Kastanis, Professors Patrick Ettinger and Christopher Castaneda of the Department of History developed a set of interview questions revolving around the historical experiences of immigrant Greeks and first-generation Greek Americans in the region. The Kastanises helped identify a list of potential interviewees typically among the most elderly members of the community who could speak to events dating back to the turn of the twentieth century.
The questions were designed to elicit memories relating to the immigration experience, family life, the development of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, and the social life of the Greek-American community. Interviews were conducted by Ettinger and Castaneda as well as trained graduate students in the Public History Master’s Program. Paganelis began recording interviews in All of the original recordings and a copy of each transcript produced to date have been deposited in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives in the University Library.

You hear it constantly. Spitting for the Greek culture is a way of detracting any form of evil presence, taking the jinx off something and basically not tempting fate. Spitting feels like second nature to us. When we have instinct to spit, to ‘protect’ someone and we don’t spit, it doesn’t feel right. Oh, and its always three spits. They had been digging for days, shaded from the Greek sun by a square of green tarpaulin slung between olive trees. The archaeologists used picks to break the cream-colored clay, baked as hard as rock, until what began as a cluster of stones just visible in the dirt became four walls in a neat rectangle, sinking down into the earth. Little more than the occasional animal bone, however, came from the soil itself.
On the morning of May 28, , the sun gave way to an unseasonable drizzle. The pair digging that day, Flint Dibble and Alison Fields, waited for the rain to clear, then stepped down into their meter-deep hole and got to work. Dibble looked at Fields. The season had not started well. The archaeologists were part of a group of close to three dozen researchers digging near the ancient Palace of Nestor, on a hilltop near Pylos on the southwest coast of Greece.
So they settled, disappointed, on a neighboring olive grove.

The family unit is the most important foundation of Greek society, providing emotional and economic support to the individual. Greek families have generally become smaller in size over the past few decades as the fertility rate has declined. Nevertheless, relationships remain extremely close. Greeks tend to be very proud of their families.
Furthermore, you may find that a Greek disputes criticisms or challenges of their family members to prevent any discredit. Any insult towards a person can be interpreted as a slur on their family as well. Most Greeks live as nuclear families in a single household; however, the extended family is kept close and visited often. In some cases, more than two generations may live together. This usually occurs when ageing grandparents have moved in to live and be cared for by the core family unit.
Nursing homes and residential care are viewed negatively; if Greeks must live in a nursing home, their children are expected to visit them often and make all arrangements for them. Age gives authority in Greek families and society at large.
